Nordic Skincare for Beginners: Build Your Routine Step by Step

A beginner skincare routine needs only three steps: cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen, applied from the thinnest texture to the thickest. Everything else is optional and can be added one product at a time once the basics are a habit.

You google "skincare routine for beginners", land on five forums with five conflicting answers, and ten minutes later it feels like you need a chemistry degree just to buy a face cream. Niacinamide, exfoliation, double cleansing, SPF reapplication: the terms pile up, and it is easy to end up doing nothing at all. Or worse, buying ten products and using them in the wrong order on the same night.

The truth is simpler than the forums make it look. A routine that works is built on three basic steps in the right order, not on a cabinet full of serums. Everything else is an add-on you can introduce once you understand why it is there.

This guide covers exactly what you need to get started, the order to apply it in, how to adapt your routine to your skin type and the season, and the two mistakes almost every beginner makes.

The Three Basic Steps, and Everything That Is Optional

A skincare routine has only three non-negotiable steps: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection. Over time, these three do more for your skin than any single serum, however it is marketed.

Everything else (serums, eye creams, exfoliating acids) is optional. These products can make a real difference for specific concerns such as dark spots or firmness, but they build on the foundation rather than replace it. If three products is all you can manage right now, choose these three.

Why These Three

  • Cleanser: removes dirt, sebum and sunscreen residue without stripping the skin barrier, so the rest of your routine can do its job.
  • Moisturiser: helps the skin hold on to water and supports its barrier, which reduces dryness, tightness and the look of fine lines caused by dehydration.
  • Sunscreen: the single most important step for helping prevent premature signs of ageing and uneven pigmentation. No serum makes up for skipping it.

Add serums and other extras only once the basic steps have become a habit.

Morning Routine: The Right Order, Step by Step

The layering rule is simple: thinnest, most water-based product first; thickest, most oil-based product last. Apply in the wrong order and a rich cream can stop a serum from reaching the skin properly.

1. Cleanser

Always start with clean skin. If your skin is dry or sensitive, a mild, creamy cleanser suits it better than a foaming one. SKINØ Gentle Cleansing Milk is made for exactly that, while SKINØ Micellar Cleansing Water is a quicker morning option if you did not wear make-up overnight.

2. Serum (optional)

Apply a water-based serum to slightly damp skin, before your cream. For dark spots and overall radiance, SKINØ Vitamin C Serum shows why formulation matters. It is built on Ascorbyl Glucoside, a stabilised form of vitamin C that does not need the very low pH that pure ascorbic acid (L-Ascorbic Acid) requires, typically around pH 3–3.5. That is why the serum sits at a skin-friendly pH of 6.5–6.8. It is a deliberate formulation choice, not a deviation. Read the full breakdown in our Vitamin C Serum INCI guide.

3. Eye Cream (optional)

The skin around the eyes is thinner and moves more than the rest of the face, which makes it more prone to dryness. Apply with your ring finger in a light patting motion, never by pulling the skin. Here, technique matters more than any specific product.

4. Moisturiser

Seal in everything you applied before. SKINØ Moisturising Day Cream gives lighter, everyday hydration, while SKINØ Anti-Age Day Cream is formulated for skin that also wants a firmer, more elastic feel.

5. Sunscreen: Always the Last Step

SKINØ Mineral Sun Stick SPF 50 uses a mineral UV filter (zinc oxide). Apply it as your actual final step, not mixed into your moisturiser, and plan to reapply during the day if you spend a long time outdoors.

Evening Routine: Same Logic, Different Priorities

The evening routine follows the same layering rule, but the priorities shift. You do not need sunscreen, which leaves room for products focused on skin renewal while you sleep.

1. Cleanser

Remove the day's sunscreen, make-up and pollution before applying anything else. This step matters even more in the evening than in the morning.

2. Serum (optional)

Evening is a good time for a peptide serum. SKINØ Peptide Anti-Aging Serum contains Hexapeptide-11, a biomimetic signal peptide, together with Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, an amino acid derivative. They belong to a different family from well-known branded peptides such as Matrixyl or Argireline, but work on the same principle: helping the skin maintain its own structure. Learn more in our guide to peptides for wrinkles.

3. Moisturiser

Your evening cream can be slightly richer than your morning one, especially if you sleep in a warm, dry bedroom.

Never introduce several new active ingredients in the same week. Add one serum at a time and give your skin at least a week to show how it reacts before the next addition.

Find Your Skin Type, and What It Actually Needs

You do not need a dermatologist to get started, just an honest look at how your skin behaves a few hours after cleansing, with no product on.

  • Dry skin feels tight or flaky. Choose a richer moisturiser (SKINØ Anti-Age Day Cream) and avoid foaming cleansers that can dry it out further.
  • Oily skin looks shiny, especially in the T-zone, within an hour. A lighter moisturiser (SKINØ Moisturising Day Cream) is often enough. Oily skin still needs hydration, just not heaviness.
  • Combination skin is oily in the T-zone and normal or dry on the cheeks. The same products usually work across the whole face, and beginners rarely need to treat zones separately.
  • Sensitive skin reacts to new products with redness, stinging or itching. Introduce one step at a time, a few days apart, and stick to simple, fragrance-free formulas until you know what your skin tolerates.

Whatever your skin type, the same basic rule applies: one new product at a time, never five at once.

Seasonal Adjustments: Winter and Summer in a Nordic Climate

The Nordic winter combines cold, dry air outdoors with dry radiator heat indoors. Both increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL), which is why the same routine can feel too light in winter and too heavy in summer. For a routine built specifically for cold, windy weather, see our Nordic skincare routine in 5 steps.

Winter

Switch to a richer moisturiser if your skin feels tight despite your usual routine. You still need sunscreen: UV light reflects off snow and reaches you on cloudy days too, even if exposure feels lower.

Summer

A lighter moisturiser often works better as humidity rises. The SPF step matters more than ever: apply generously and reapply if you sweat or stay outdoors for several hours.

The Two Most Common Beginner Mistakes

1. Adding Too Many Active Ingredients at Once

The most common reason beginners get breakouts, redness or feel that "nothing works" is introducing several strong actives in the same week. The skin has no chance to show which product is causing a reaction, and the whole routine often gets abandoned for no reason. One addition at a time, with at least a week of observation, is the only way to learn what your skin really likes.

2. Skipping or Under-Applying Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the step most often dropped. It does not feel as "active" as a serum, and the results are not visible right away. But consistent SPF use is the single factor that makes the biggest difference to how your skin looks in ten years. A fingertip-sized amount is rarely enough for the whole face and neck; most people apply too little rather than too much.

SKINØ as a Certified Starter Kit for Beginners

Being new to skincare is largely about not having to guess. The entire SKINØ range is certified by ECOCERT to the COSMOS standard, which means each formula has been checked by an independent third party, not just backed by a promise on the pack. All products are notified in the EU cosmetics portal (CPNP) under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and manufactured to the GMP standard EN ISO 22716:2007.

That makes it easier to build a routine without reading ten INCI lists to feel confident. Cleanser, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen are all covered by certified products with a full, transparent ingredient list.

Summary: Start Simple, Build Gradually

A beginner routine does not need to be advanced to work. Cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen are the foundation that makes the biggest difference over time. Add serums and other extras one step at a time, follow the thinnest-to-thickest layering order, and adjust textures to the season rather than replacing your whole routine.

Give every new step at least a week before drawing conclusions, and remember: consistency over months beats intensity over a few weeks, every time.
