Peptides Against Wrinkles: The Science and the Right Serum for You
Most people who buy their first peptide serum do it because they've seen words like "collagen-stimulating" or "clinically proven effect" on the packaging. But what peptides actually do inside the skin cells is rarely explained properly.
As founder of SKINØ, I've worked with ECOCERT-certified peptide formulas for more than two decades and I field questions daily about what actually delivers results. The most common one: do peptides against wrinkles really work? The answer is yes, but with the right expectations and the right ingredients. Peptides aren't Botox in a bottle, and they aren't a quick fix.
The evidence for peptides in skincare is moderate and rests primarily on clinical cosmetic studies and preclinical data, but they constitute a well-founded tool for supporting the skin's own collagen processes over time — provided you choose the right product and use it consistently.
What Peptides Are and How They Communicate with the Skin's Cells
Peptides are short chains of amino acids — in other words, miniature versions of proteins. In the skin, they function as biological messengers: they carry signals between cells and tell them what needs to be produced or repaired. When collagen breaks down naturally, peptides are released as a kind of distress signal, and that signal activates the fibroblasts to increase collagen production. Topically applied peptides mimic exactly that process.
Collagen decline begins around age 20–30 and increases gradually with age. It shows up progressively: finer lines around the eyes and mouth, skin that feels thinner and less resilient, reduced firmness in the cheeks. Collagen-stimulating peptides address the problem at its root, unlike ingredients that only fill out the skin temporarily. That makes them a logical choice for anyone who wants to support the skin's structure over the long term.
Peptides Against Wrinkles: Which Ingredients Actually Have Support?
Not all peptides are equally well researched. Here are the three types with relatively the strongest evidence for a visible effect on wrinkles and skin firmness — general knowledge that applies regardless of which brand you choose.
Signal Peptides: Matrixyl and Collagen-Stimulating Variants
Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, often sold under the trademark Matrixyl 3000, are among the more well-studied signal peptides. Based on in vitro data and smaller clinical cosmetic studies, they are proposed to activate TGF-beta signalling pathways in the fibroblasts, which may increase gene expression for type I and type III collagen as well as other structural proteins in the dermis. The support for improved firmness and reduced fine lines is moderate, and the evidence isn't as robust as for retinoids.
Matrixyl Synthe'6 is the next-generation variant of the same peptide class and, according to the manufacturer, contains additional peptide types targeting collagen IV, laminin and fibronectin. If you're looking for "Matrixyl" on a product, always check that the INCI names Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 actually appear high up on the list.
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 and Expression Lines
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, known under the trade name Argireline, inhibits local muscle contractions in a milder way than botulinum toxin. That makes it specifically relevant against expression lines — the lines formed by repeated facial movements around the eyes, forehead and corners of the mouth.
Wang et al. (2013) showed in a study on Chinese subjects that periorbital wrinkles decreased significantly with the use of Argireline. A review article reports that a 10 percent AH-8 cream reduced wrinkle depth by 30 percent after 30 days, while another study in the same review reported a 49 percent reduction after four weeks. It's worth noting that these studies are often small and include combination formulations, which affects how generalisable the figures are. The effect applies primarily to expression lines and is weaker for general firmness compared with collagen-stimulating signal peptides.
Copper Peptides for Repair and Skin Structure
GHK-Cu, or Copper Tripeptide-1, is a copper peptide with proposed effects on collagen and elastin as well as the skin's healing capacity and density. The support for a direct reduction in visible wrinkles is more indirect and partly based on preclinical data. Copper peptides work best as a complement to signal peptides rather than as a standalone anti-ageing ingredient, and can be incompatible with pure ascorbic acid at high concentrations.
How Long Does It Take Before Peptides Against Wrinkles Deliver Visible Results?
Peptides require the skin's own processes to be activated, and that takes time. Most people notice increased plumpness and softer fine lines within two to four weeks. That's not days, but it does require patience and consistency.
Clearer changes in firmness and elasticity usually take 6–8 weeks or longer, depending on the product and how the results are measured. Clinical studies on palmitoyl peptides and AH-8 typically run for 30 to 56 days, with the clearest results appearing toward the end of that period.
What determines how quickly you see results is the identity of the peptides in the product, how high up they appear on the INCI list, and how consistently you use it. A peptide serum used three times a week simply won't deliver the same outcome as daily use morning and evening.
How to Use Peptide Serum Against Wrinkles in Your Daily Routine
Peptides have no acclimatisation period and require no build-up time. You can start using them right away, twice daily, without needing to ramp up the dose. Evening use suits the skin's natural repair cycle, but morning use is just as valuable.
A simple routine looks like this: cleansing, toner if you use one, then the peptide serum on slightly damp skin. Follow with a moisturiser and finish with SPF in the morning. Many formulation experts recommend not letting the serum be the final layer, since peptides in leave-on products penetrate best under a protective barrier of moisturiser.
What You Can Combine Peptides With — and What to Avoid
Peptides are generally safe to combine with retinol, vitamin C and niacinamide. They work via different mechanisms and tend to complement rather than compete with each other. A practical setup is vitamin C and peptide serum in the morning, retinol and peptide serum in the evening.
Peptides are proteins and are destabilised by low pH. Strong acid exfoliants such as AHA and BHA, or pure ascorbic acid at a high concentration, can break down the peptides and render them ineffective. It's not a dangerous reaction, but it is an unnecessary and costly inefficiency. The solution is simple: exfoliate in the evening, peptide serum in the morning — or let at least thirty minutes pass between products if you use both in the same routine session. Never apply a peptide serum directly on top of an acidic exfoliant.
What to Look For on the Ingredient List
Start by opening the INCI list and looking for concrete peptide names. They should appear high up on the list, not in position 25 of 30. A serum where the peptides show up far down the INCI list likely contains them at a concentration too low for a noticeable effect.
Also check that the formula is pH-balanced and doesn't contain strong acids in the same product. Otherwise you risk the peptides being unstable already in the bottle, long before they reach your skin. A clean, focused formula without unnecessary irritants is always preferable to a product trying to solve everything at once.

Here's the principle put into practice. Our serum is formulated with organic Aloe Vera as the active base and does not contain Matrixyl, Argireline or GHK-Cu — the three peptides described above. It's important to be clear about that, since precision about which peptide is actually in the bottle is the entire point of this article. Our serum's peptides are Hexapeptide-11 and Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, two other molecules within the same broad family of biomimetic signal peptides.
How Our Peptides Actually Work
Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline is built on hydroxyproline, an amino acid that is a direct structural component of the collagen molecule itself. By delivering a lipid-bound variant of this amino acid to the skin, the fibroblasts are given access to a building block specifically linked to collagen synthesis, which in theory supports the skin's density and firmness in a way that sits close to collagen's own chemistry.
Hexapeptide-11 is linked to epidermal renewal — it supports cell turnover in the skin's outer layer rather than working deep in the dermis the way Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline does. Together, they work at two different levels of the skin's renewal process: one supports the structure at depth, the other renewal at the surface.
Neither of these two peptides has as extensive published clinical data as Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 or Copper Tripeptide-1 (there are simply fewer studies done on them specifically), but the general mechanism of action — biomimetic signalling to fibroblasts and keratinocytes — is one they share with the more well-known peptides described earlier in this article.
The Rest of the Formulation, Ingredient by Ingredient
Moisture-binding system: The serum uses hyaluronic acid in two molecular sizes, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate, which provides moisture binding at several levels at once: the smaller molecule reaches somewhat deeper, while the salt form binds moisture closer to the skin surface. Glycerin and Sodium PCA, both skin-identical moisturising factors already naturally present in the skin, reinforce that effect further. Propanediol and Pentylene Glycol also contribute as moisture-retaining solvents.
Antioxidant protection: Strawberry seed oil and blueberry seed oil (organic) provide natural antioxidants, Tocopherol is vitamin E, and Ascorbyl Palmitate is a fat-soluble form of vitamin C that protects against oxidative stress. Ginkgo Biloba extract stimulates microcirculation, which contributes to a fresher-looking skin tone.
Barrier support: Phytosterols help strengthen the skin barrier. Jojoba oil (organic) resembles the skin's own sebum and works as an emollient without feeling heavy.
Carriers and texture agents: Aqua, Cetearyl Alcohol (a fatty, non-drying alcohol not to be confused with drying alcohols such as Alcohol Denat.), Isoamyl Laurate, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Xanthan Gum give the serum its texture and stability.
Preservation: Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate is a naturally fermented preservation system, complemented with Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate. Sodium Phytate works as a chelating agent that stabilises the formula. Citric Acid and Potassium Hydroxide adjust and balance the pH.
Colour: CI 77491 (iron oxide) is a mineral pigment that gives the serum its colour.
Fragrance: The formulation contains a natural fragrance blend, with Linalool, Geraniol and Citronellol declared as allergens in accordance with the COSMOS standard's requirement for open labelling. That's an important difference from undeclared synthetic fragrance: every component is identifiable, giving you as the consumer the ability to make an informed choice if you have a known fragrance sensitivity.
How Long You Need to Use It to See an Effect
Based on the same time frames that apply to peptides in general: expect increased plumpness and a softer feel within two to four weeks with daily use, morning and evening. Clearer improvements in firmness take 6–8 weeks. Be consistent — a serum used sporadically will never deliver the results a daily routine does.
Certification and Suitability
The serum is ECOCERT COSMOS Organic certified, 100 percent vegan, EU CPNP registered and free from gluten and nuts. It's formulated without hormone-disrupting substances and suits mature skin, dry and dehydrated skin, as well as sensitive skin that requires transparent documentation of every ingredient.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is best suited for expression lines. Other signal peptides, like the ones in our own serum, work via the same underlying principle without having exactly the same published data behind them.
Choose a serum with relevant peptides high on the INCI list, integrate it into a routine without strong acids in direct combination, and give it time to work. It doesn't require a complicated ten-product system. The right ingredients, a consistent routine and patience are what determine the result.
