How to Read an INCI List
Ingredients present at more than 1% must be listed in descending order of concentration. Those below 1% may be listed in any order. The list therefore shows what dominates the formula, but not exact percentages. Ingredients at the end of the list are present in small amounts.
Why Is Aloe Vera Juice Listed Before Water?
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice* is the first ingredient, ahead of Aqua. Aloe juice is mostly water, so its first place says more about the formula's water phase than about a high level of specific aloe compounds. The aloe juice comes from organic farming, as the asterisk shows. Read more about why aloe vera works as a base in natural skincare.
What Is Alteromonas Ferment Extract?
It is a ferment extract produced by marine bacteria of the genus Alteromonas. The manufacturer's product description calls it a marine active ingredient. Its concentration is not stated, so we do not present any clinical results for this ingredient in this cream. It appears late in the list, which suggests a low concentration.
Ingredient by Ingredient
Hydration and Water Phase
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*: a water-based, hydrating base.
- Aqua: water.
- Glycerin: a humectant that binds water in the skin's surface layer.
- Pentylene Glycol: a moisture-binding solvent that also improves the skin feel.
- Betaine: a moisture-binding ingredient.
- Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate: hyaluronic acid in different molecular sizes that binds moisture and leaves skin feeling soft. The product information describes this as multi-weight hyaluronic acid.
Oils, Butters and Emollients
- Jojoba Seed Oil*: a plant oil that softens the skin.
- Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*: a rich butter that gives the cream its rich feel and softens the skin.
- Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil*: a softening plant oil.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Isoamyl Laurate: light emollients for a smooth texture.
Emulsion and Texture
- Polyglyceryl-6 Stearate and Polyglyceryl-6 Behenate: emulsifiers that hold the oil and water phases together.
- Cetearyl Alcohol: a fatty alcohol that stabilises the emulsion and softens the skin. It is not drying like denatured alcohol.
- Palmitic Acid and Stearic Acid: fatty acids that add to texture and stability.
- Cellulose and Xanthan Gum: thickeners that give the medium-thick texture.
Plant Extracts
- Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea (Lingonberry) Fruit Extract*: lingonberry extract.
- Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Fruit Extract*: blackcurrant extract.
- Sambucus Nigra (Elder) Flower Extract*: elderflower extract.
- Echinacea Purpurea Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*: purple coneflower extract.
The manufacturer does not state the concentration of the extracts, so we make no claims about their effect in the finished cream.
Antioxidants
- Ascorbyl Palmitate: an oil-soluble form of vitamin C used as an antioxidant in the formula. The cream is not a vitamin C product, and this ingredient appears late in the list.
- Tocopherol: vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects the oils in the formula.
Pigments and Glow
- CI 77891, Mica and Tin Oxide: mineral pigments that affect the cream's colour and sheen. They do not act as a UV filter in this cream, and the product states no SPF.
pH and Stability
- Potassium Hydroxide: pH adjuster.
- Sodium Phytate: a chelating agent that binds metal ions and helps keep the formula stable.
Fragrance and Other Ingredients
- Parfum: gives the cream its lemon balm scent with a soft floral note.
- Phenethyl Alcohol: an aromatic alcohol with a mild scent.
- Alcohol: ethanol, listed near the end.
- Benzyl Salicylate, Limonene, Citral and Linalool: fragrance components that must be declared separately under EU law because they can cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.
What the Cream Does Not Contain
Based on the INCI list, the cream contains no parabens, no silicones, no mineral oil, no PEG compounds and no sulfates. It also contains no retinol, peptides, niacinamide or ceramides. It is a moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, plant oils and plant extracts, not a retinol or peptide product. If you are looking for peptides, see SKINØ Peptide Anti-Aging Serum.
Note that ethanol (Alcohol) appears near the end of the list. Worth knowing if you avoid alcohol in skincare.
Fragrance, Allergens and Sensitive Skin
The cream contains fragrance and four declared fragrance allergens (Benzyl Salicylate, Limonene, Citral and Linalool). Echinacea belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae), and people allergic to this plant family may react. If you have a fragrance allergy, an Asteraceae allergy or very reactive skin, patch test first: apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm and wait 24–48 hours before using the cream on your face.
According to the manufacturer's safety data sheet (NP5809), the product is not classified as irritating to skin or eyes. That does not replace your own patch test.
How to Use the Cream
According to the product information, apply the cream to clean skin. It is a day cream, and the morning routine looks like this:
- Cleanse your skin.
- Apply a serum, if you use one.
- Apply the day cream to your face and neck.
- Finish with a separate sunscreen, such as SKINØ Mineral Sun Stick SPF 50.
Keep the jar tightly closed at room temperature. Introduce the cream as the only new product and give your skin at least a week before adding anything else.
What Can You Expect?
The cream is formulated for hydration and a smooth, soft skin feel on mature skin. We do not promise wrinkle reduction or timelines for results: claims about fine lines require product-specific testing under the EU rules for cosmetic claims (Regulation (EU) No 655/2013), and we do not present such tests here. Results from a moisturiser vary between individuals.
Certifications and Manufacturing
- ECOCERT COSMOS NATURAL: certified natural cosmetics. COSMOS NATURAL is a different level from COSMOS ORGANIC. The certification covers raw materials, manufacturing and labelling, and is not proof of a specific effect on the skin.
- GMP, EN ISO 22716:2007: the manufacturing standard for cosmetics.
- EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009: the product has a safety assessment under the regulation and is notified in the EU cosmetics portal (CPNP).
- Vegan Friendly and Gluten Free: as labelled on the cream.
- Asterisks (*) in the INCI list: ingredients from organic farming.
